I've seen a lot on tv.com lately that Katara means cursed in Greek, and that's why Katara is named that. Now, I do agree it means cursed in Greek, but Katara means “under the sun light” in Malayo-Polynesian, and I like this definition much more for her name. Malayo-Polynesian is also in the same area as a bunch of other influences come from. Just so you know all the options, Katara is also a really old Arabic word meaning "a building having arches", but it's really not that applicable compared to the Malayo-Polynesian word. I mean, under the sun can be her positive look at life, her living in the Anarctic (if the world of Avatar was built like the world of earth, then they'd have several weeks of strait sunlight).
