Ok, I have read that Sokka means socks in Icelandic. This is most definitly true, but how much does socks have in common with Sokka? Er, not much. So I researched his name a bit and found out something interesting. "Soka" means creating values out of respect for human life, and Sokka definitly does that. If he knows people are going to get hurt, then he does all he can to try to stop that (The Fortuenteller episode comes to mind here).

Moreso the episode "Jet". Sokka really goes out of the way for that one--in The Fortuneteller, the whole gang helps.

Well, another take on it, sokka (足下) in Japanese, means "underfoot" as in, in the way. I doubt that was intended.
