Here is the information I've found on the word Zuko thus far: Zuko is an evidently really great smelling incense that is used to purify the body, especially the hands. In Buddhism, this represents self-discipline, and so I could easily see how this is how Zuko's name was derived. 'Specially with that whole how incense burns thing. Frank Zuko was the bully who had a soft spot in Grease, but I doubt that has much to do with it.

I'v actually heard that Zuko means 'slashes at the wind sounds' in some language. I'm not entirely sure on it, but it makes tons of sense to me.

Heh, yeah. While reasearching I heard that too, but I never saw what language that was from, so I disregarded it as hearsay. If anyone knows it, I'd love to research it further!

Ko or Kuo in Japanese means three things : 1) light, 2) happiness, 3) peace
Now, in Japanese, if you add Zu after a verb, it means that without doing that verb. For instance : Hairazu = without entering.
So basically, if the creator of avatar decided to place Zu infront of Ko, it could have meant without peace, which kinds of makes sense because of his whole inner struggle.
Then again, all the other suggestions seem quite possible too.

Zuko means glory or grace in Xhosa, depending on the context. Xhosa is one of the indeginous languages of South Africa. You can quote me on this since I am Xhosa and my first name is Zuko
